Since the remaining stones were very worn, the client decided that she'd like to replace all of the stones at the time of the prong restoration. 16 prongs and 4 new stones later, this piece is ready to be loved for many more years!</image:caption>

<image:caption>This ring was loved for many years before excessive wear caused one of the diamonds to fall out. <image:title>Repair Gallery - Antique Bridal Restoration</image:title>
<image:caption>Our most treasured jewelry should be repaired in such a way that both strength and beauty are maintained. In this example, I restored a 14k wedding set without the use of a torch or solder. With the help of Rosie, my laser welder, I applied 19k white gold to each prong without disturbing the diamonds or the design elements. The top photo shows a close-up of the engagement ring's center stone. The prongs were so worn that the stone was ready to fall out. The prongs on the other stones were similarly worn. The bottom photo shows the completed restoration. 4 prongs on the 2mm center diamond of the engagement ring; 24 prongs on the 1mm melee; 4 accent beads on the shoulders.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Repair Gallery - Keeping it Cool</image:title>
<image:caption>Replacing the loop on top of a pendant is a common repair that can be complicated by delicate color inlays, patinas and fragile stones. In the repair shown, the new sterling silver loop was welded on using sterling silver laser wire. The resulting joint is strong and matches the rest of the piece. The best part is that the pendant remained cool enough to hold in my hands, thus preserving its delicate nature. Repaired for Morande Jewelers in Tolland, CT</image:caption>

      <image:title>Repair Gallery - From Ring to Pendant</image:title>
<image:caption>In this case, the client decided they would wear this piece more if it were a pendant instead of a ring. I used a portion of the grooved ring shank to create the bail. Assembled for Morande Jewelers in Tolland, CT</image:caption>

After fabricating the metal model, I created a non-shrink RTV silicone mold of the pendant so that I could make the purple wax copies which can be cast in your choice of metals. Color inlays are available in resin or unleaded vitreous enamel.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Gallery - Heide Zabel: Owner/Goldsmith</image:title>
<image:caption>This is me, Heide, the one-woman force behind the Jewel Forge. Though I have been completely captivated by jewelry and gem stones since I was about 4 years old, my career as a repair and restoration goldsmith started 10 years ago. Since then, I've worked in several high-volume wholesale and retail settings, and have had the opportunity to become knowledgeable in many areas. Aside from a huge variety of miscellaneous repairs and a large assortment of custom work, I estimate that I've resized or reshanked many thousands of rings, mended countless chains, rehinged hundreds of tennis bracelets, fixed dozens of pairs of glasses and remounted, repronged and set thousands of stones. When I repair or create jewelry, it is important to me that I take my time to do the best possible job I can. I work with a microscope at my bench as well as at my laser welder to achieve my top priority: high quality repairs and custom jewelry.  </image:caption>

      <image:title>About Gallery - Qualifications</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the questions I'm asked the most is how I learned to be a goldsmith. Over the last 10 years I've always sought employment with high end businesses, both wholesale and retail, where I've been able to work with the best and learn from them. My continuous drive to improve my education has also led me through many trade books and courses with masters in fields such as machining, forging, stone setting and enameling. The beautiful thing about my trade is the vast scope of techniques and applications that are available. The imagination is the limit! I'm confident that I'll be learning new things about jewelry, art and technology for all of my days.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Gallery - Rosie</image:title>
<image:caption>Rosie is my laser welder, and she is the closest I have to an employee. She is high-tech, precise to .2mm, and allows me to seamlessly weld materials such as gold, platinum, silver, steel and titanium while keeping items cool enough to hold in my hands. The ability to keep jewelry cool allows me to work right next heat sensitive materials such as opals and emeralds without removing them from their mountings. Sometimes, traditional torch techniques are the way to go. The rest of the time, Rosie saves the day!</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Gallery - About the photos...</image:title>
<image:caption>The only photo-editing tool that I use in my photos of jewelry repairs, custom jewelry pieces and available stones is cropping. I never change color tints or lighting to make up for a bad photo. It is my preference to photograph stones outdoors in natural light so that the colors are as true as possible.  </image:caption>

<image:caption>This diamond and sapphire infinity pendant started out as her dad's wedding ring. I melted the original 14k yellow band down, rolled the material out with the mill and pulled it through a round drawplate before bending it into its new shape. After polishing I applied rhodium plating to a portion of the pendant to give it a 2-tone finish. This beautiful memory was created for Morande Jewelers in Tolland, CT.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This mother's ring was loved for many years until prong failure caused the loss of a stone. Since the remaining stones were very worn, the client decided that she'd like to replace all of the stones at the time of the prong restoration. 16 prongs and 4 new stones later, this piece is ready to be loved for many more years!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sometimes, I only need to replace the setting for a single stone. Other times, it makes sense to put all of the stones into a new mounting. In this photo, the new mounting is a commercially available piece. Using commercially available parts and mountings is a great way to save money when compared to custom work. <image:caption>This ring was loved for many years before excessive wear caused one of the diamonds to fall out. <image:title>Repairs - Antique Bridal Restoration</image:title>

      <image:title>Repairs - Keeping it Cool</image:title>
<image:caption>Replacing the loop on top of a pendant is a common repair that can be complicated by delicate color inlays, patinas and fragile stones. In the repair shown, the new sterling silver loop was welded on using sterling silver laser wire. The resulting joint is strong and matches the rest of the piece. The best part is that the pendant remained cool enough to hold in my hands, thus preserving its delicate nature. Repaired for Morande Jewelers in Tolland, CT</image:caption>

      <image:title>Repairs - From Ring to Pendant</image:title>
<image:caption>In this case, the client decided they would wear this piece more if it were a pendant instead of a ring. I used a portion of the grooved ring shank to create the bail. Assembled for Morande Jewelers in Tolland, CT</image:caption>

      <image:title>Repairs - Can't Take the Heat</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes we want to combine pieces of jewelry that are already set with stones. Traditional torch-soldering frequently requires that heat-sensitive stones are removed before the pieces can be safely assembled. Laser welding was the perfect solution for this job! <image:caption>Do you desire a brighter finish on your white gold jewelry? Need to repair the finish on custom jewelry? Perhaps you wish to turn a yellow piece white (or a white piece yellow) for a time. <image:title>Repairs - Drill It!</image:title>

      <image:title>Memorials - Their Grandma's Wedding Ring</image:title>
<image:caption>Grandma's wedding ring was enough for them both! For this project, I split a 8mm wedding band into 2 pieces and created 2 asymmetrical curvy hearts. Each 14k heart is 1" long and set with a 1/4ct diamond. These keepsakes were created for Morande Jewelers in Tolland, CT.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Memorials - Melt my Hearts</image:title>
<image:caption>For this project, Michael had a client who wished to melt down some very sentimental jewelry and give it new life as a pair of memorial hearts. The first photo shows the original jewelry. Then it is shown after I poured the melted gold into an ingot. Finally, the last photo shows the two finished traditional hearts each set with a diamond and rhodium plated. Created for Morande Jewelers in Tolland, CT.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Memorials - Her Dad's Wedding Ring</image:title>
<image:caption>This diamond and sapphire infinity pendant started out as her dad's wedding ring. I melted the original 14k yellow band down, rolled the material out with the mill and pulled it through a round drawplate before bending it into its new shape. After polishing I applied rhodium plating to a portion of the pendant to give it a 2-tone finish. This beautiful memory was created for Morande Jewelers in Tolland, CT.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Memorials - Their Daughter's Jewelry</image:title>
<image:caption>These symbols of infinite love were created using their daughter’s gold and sapphires. Her items were melted down, milled and drawn to make the 2mm wire I used to shape the keepsakes. Thank you to Morande Jewelers in Tolland, CT for this very special commission</image:caption>
